Summary
Online Activity: Wednesday 2 December to Wednesday 16 December 2009
Face-to-face Activity: Thursday 17 December 2009
Geert Hofstede, Emeritus Professor, Maastricht University rates nations on five Cultural Dimensions. These dimensions are Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance and Long-term Orientation. These may be used as a framework to consider cultural differences and how they may have an impact on the learning and teaching process.
Power Distance is the extent to which less powerful members of organisations accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. This represents inequality, but defined from below, not above. It suggests that a society's level of inequality is endorsed by the followers as much as by the leaders.
For example, the higher the score on Hofstede's power distance dimension the more accepting lower members of society are of inequalities. This will have an impact on the status given to teachers, doctors and parents etc. India scores 77, Pakistan scores 55 and the UK scores 35. How might such cultural differences impact on relationships in the classroom? What strategies should we use to accommodate these differences?
The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has developed what is called the SQA Academy to extend and enhance the training and development opportunities available to all those who contribute to the assessment processes that underpin the qualifications of the SQA.
To ensure that this course is developed to meet the needs of Scotland's 43 colleges, Scotland's Colleges has linked with the SQA Academy to combine their knowledge, skills and experience to create this staff development course.
On the start date of the online activity, an email will be sent to delegates with instructions on how to create an account with SQA Academy.
Online activities will be a mixture of articles to read, quizzes, discussion forums and reflection exercises. There should only be approximately two hours of online work to be done before the face-to-face workshop.
The course uses the blended learning approach with both online and face-to-face learning activities. Delegates are provided with many opportunities to reflect on their learning and teaching practice in a supported environment whilst gaining accreditation for CPD hours. Throughout the course and beyond the focus is on the impact this professional development activity will have on the learners' experience in college.
