Summary

There has been a long-standing and healthy debate in Scotland's colleges around how best to develop learners' programming skills and how to interest learners in pursuing programming as a career. Teaching staff see programming as hard to teach and learners see it as difficult to learn. (HMIe Computing Aspect Report - October 2009).

Recent events for Computing and IT staff have reflected and discussed this challenge. This event is part of the response from the community to the challenge, and will provide an opportunity for practitioners to consider a number of environments that can potentially support delivery of innovative and engaging programming activity within the curriculum.

Scotland's Colleges, in association with representatives from Apple and colleges in Scotland are hosting this awareness raising event.  The morning sessions will look at the use of Apple application development tools within current programmes and the potential for integrating development of iPhone apps into curriculum delivery.

In the afternoon, there will be sessions on Alice programming, Xbox / XNA Games studio programming and Second Life programming.  As well as an opportunity to consider innovation in the delivery of programming within the curriculum, it is also an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the sector regarding the use of these applications.

The intention is to offer hands-on sessions in future if sufficient interest is expressed in any of the areas discussed during the day.

Aim

To consider the potential of a range of programming tools to support innovation in curriculum delivery.
